Movies made by 4th graders

Children in 4th grade have been introduced to the basics of stop motion animation. For this project, children were encouraged to pair themselves into groups to create a movie of their choice, using any materials and backgrounds they chose. Here is a sampling of some of these videos. We used a combination of apps to make them. Some kids used Imotion app, some used iMovie and yet, others chose to work with Stopmotion studio by Cateater.

Kinder printmaking continues

Children in Kindergarten will be making stamps of insects for their final printmaking project. As all projects, we begin with sketches. This class we focused on connecting simple shapes and lines to make insects. Children were offered hundreds of resource images to look at and be inspired by to make their drawings. They were to make 10 drawings of 10 different insects during a 35 minute class. The next class they will choose one of these to illustrate on a sheet of 4"x6" scratch foam. Making of the printing plates will take at least 2 days seeing as the focus will not only be on drawing the insect but also in thickening the lines and coloring in some areas so that the printing plate is both interesting, visually pleasing and somewhat complex with lines and shapes in all areas of the printing plate.

4th graders create Picasso- inspired portraits

I am super proud of these creations. I had to be out of school Tuesday and left some lessons plans for the substitute. The lesson plan for the 4th graders, who normally come to art for an hour and 10 minutes needed to be involved and complex to fill the whole time. I had the teacher read a biography about Picasso to the students first. After, they used a worksheet to help them plan their faces. Last, they used oil pastels to color in the faces and the background. I think I may use this again soon. The results were very pleasing.

Learning about symmetry

What better way to teach symmetry than the old fold painted paper method? Children in Kindergarten loved this project so much. I gave them a half sheet with a basic half butterfly drawn and they used paint to fill in the spaces drawn. They were told to quickly fold the paper and open it to reveal their butterflies.

4th Grade stop motion animation introduction videos

These are just mere explorations of the media. In every unit, we always FIRST and foremost explore the media. Each class used an hour and 10 minutes to create 2 videos. The exploration is valuable for it allows the students to grasp how many frames it takes to make even a 10 second video. This information is valuable and essential for when they break off into groups and begin working on their own video.

Printmaking Unit continues- kindergartners use every day objects to create prints

Printmaking for kindergarten is about making marks....simply making marks. We began this unit by making dandelions (see HERE). We used out fingers to make marks on paper with paint. Today we used common everyday objects to make marks. Next we will explore using other simple materials to continue to make marks. Because the class is somewhat messy, children wore smocks. I only use t-shirts as smocks in my art room, they are easy to put on and take off; no tying is needed, hence less teacher assistance needed. I also combined three of my tables so all the materials were on a large table and children could freely go around and find new tools and colors as needed. It's important when you begin that you teach every single interaction, including how to walk with your painted paper though the class to how your hands go up and down when printing, not side to side.

This unit is intended to present kindergartners with various rich printmaking experiences ranging from everyday object printmaking all the way to collagraphs and printing with ink. Next in this unit we will create texture on surfaces, touch on collagraphs, rubbings as will as there simple printmaking techniques. The importance being exposing the students to a wide and rich variety of experiences in printmaking.
