Displays around the halls (Stewart)

Been working hard to pepper the walls with art. Here is a display of all the Louise Nevelson-inspired reliefs. In addition to the work I try to engage all children and adults in the work by having questions and exercises posted (see below).

All pre-k kids have been exploring the art of Louise Nevelson. Here are images of the kids painting their reliefs.

Pre-k Classes use recycled items to create their own Louise Nevelson creations

Children in Pre-k were shown some images of the work of Louise Nevelson in preparation for their next unit in sculpture and construction.

Children were told that Ms. Nevelson made choices about where she put her pieces to create her abstract art.

Thanks to the parents' donation of small items Ms. Cutelis was able to offer a wide variety of nick knacks for children to choose from.

Children were then given a meat tray (also donated by Murch families) and were expected to try out various arrangements or "compositions". After a few minutes of composing, Ms. Cutelis poured a substantial amount of glue on the tray and children were to place their favored items on the tray in whatever composition they chose.

Children enjoyed this activity tremendously. It allowed them to ask themselves what they liked or not liked instead of seeking for external validation from the teacher on what was "right" or "wrong". The following week children will paint their abstract work in one color as a way to unify everyone's work for display.

Exercises in Composition (4th Grade)

As a skill building activity before working on our Louise Nevelson-inspired 3D collages, children used parent-donated items and placed them in varied compositions on a black piece of paper. Please keep these small items and show boxes coming for we will be needing plenty of them for this unit. Having a varied vocabulary pertaining to composition will allow students to better discuss each others' work once we start the unit.

Call for Recycled Materials-

I'd like to work with with the ideas of Louise Nevelson this year with one of the classes.

I will need:

1. show box tops/shoe boxes

2. cigar bozes

3. all sorts of toy parts and small pieces of any kind.
