Experiencing the benefits and struggles of teamwork

Never thought I would open up such a huge can of worms when I asked kids to work in teams of 7-8 to create a quilt. I immediately decided then to use the opportunity to have discussions with the children about group dynamics and as a group try to address some of the struggles they were facing. Surprisingly, these struggles are very similar to struggles we face as grown ups when we work as part of a team. Overall, we are working through the kinks and 2nd grade is such a great year to talk to kids about fairness, equality and friendships.....we are having a blast.

2nd finished 2nd grade quilt-Stephens (2nd Grade)

You can view this new quilt in the lobby of the school. Kids in Ms. Stephen's class traced, cut, decorated and glued the diamonds on this sheet. A huge thank you to parents who donated varied fabrics to make this quilt especially beautiful and colorful.

4th Grade students cut their patterns

We used measuring tape to measure our waist 1/2 circumference. We also made choice on how long to make our vests.

We used sharpies to trace our pattern onto fabric. By the way.....we need fabric for 25 more kids...have any we could use. Drop them by the art room....thanks!

Ready to be cut!!

Need any type of fabric for colonial vests

Do you have any extra fabric hanging around you don't need. I need cloth for a project we are doing in 4th grade. Kids are making colonial vests. Any cloth will do.....old towels, old sheets (any print), pillow cases, large t-shits, old curtains. Anything we can cut down into smaller pieces and sew together into a vest.....Thanks in advance for all your support!
