The Art of History: Creating memorials for historic figures and events with Kay Thomas

Tonight I attended this class at the Kennedy Center. It was amazing,  as all Kennedy Centers professional developments are.

The presenter was Kay Thomas and she led us through two activities..... a skill building activity and a sculpture making activity. The one below was a step-by-step, do-as-I-do skill building activity. We learned how to give out paper a foot, how to make an arch, how to make a zig, zag (she called it something else), and other paper skills.

Afterwards she showed us how to use manila folders and a hard cardboard base to make a "memorial". Below are some examples created by the teachers. I absolutely recommend the class for all teachers, even art teachers.

Below are two images of my memorial to Maya Angelou. The text wrapped around the base is her poem, Phenomenal woman.

This is the image I shared on Twitter and Instagram.
