While living in New York I was doing a lot of wedding photography. These are postcards with my NY-based business info on them now being repurposed into sculpting materials. The kids had a wonderful time creating various 3D sculptures.
This site is meant primarily as a resource for other elementary visual art teachers. Enjoy! All works posted before August 2014 are images from an elementary school I worked at in DC, all posted after that date are from an language immersion elementary school in Arlington, Virginia. Feel free to use ideas shared on this blog. Please, if trying out the ideas , at the very minimum give me written/verbal credit. Thank you!!

3rd graders begin sculpting unit by using recycled postcards to create 3d structures
First displays of the year
These are my first few displays of the year. I try really hard to both show great respect for the work children do by the way I display the kids' work but I also aim to describe the process to the community as a whole.
Sample of wet-on-wet and wet-on- dry combined technique painting by artist Ella in Mrs. Pink's class
Here is an example of one of our watercolor explorations. These paintings took 2 classes. During the first class children explored the wet-on-wet techniques using soft bristled watercolor brushes. During the second class children used smaller brushes and metallic watercolors to add 'smaller marks' on top of their paintings while practicing their wet-on-dry techniques.
5th Graders print their abstract insect parts stencils on their mural paper
In the art room most kids stand while working so they have a better view of their work from above. Kids in the art room work very well independently.
A stencil designed by a 5th grade artist....to be used on our abstract insect part mural.
Second graders use metallic watercolors and detail brushes to explore wet on dry watercolor techniques
Kids LOVEEEEEE all things metallic.....please come to the stairway by the art room to see the wonderful paintings the second graders made.
Detail brushes are used to make small marks. Artists purposely choose their brushes depending on what type of marks they want to make.

Getting ready for 1st grade texture collage extravaganza
Thanks to the amazing parents at Murch, mixed media projects like these are much more fun. 90% of the items in this mixed media collage project are donated by Murch families.
Prek artists practice using scissors and cutting free-form shapes
Scissor skills are essential to all young students. Ability to use your hands to cut the shapes you desire are very useful in art. Children who excell in cutting also excell in penmanship and all other small motor skills. I encourage all families to practice cutting at home......if left-handed, please make sure you order left-handed scissors from amazon.com.
2nd graders explore watercoloring wet-on wet and wet-on-dry
This is an image from my Elmo 'projector' ....Last year the HSA bought the art room an Elmo projector allowing me the ability to share enlarged images of my live demonstrations on a huge screen. This has truly revolutionized the way I run my class. Thank yuo HSA!!
