This is a post about validation. I believe fully in sharing all I do so that others can engage with it, maybe even try the things I do themselves. I shared this video ---> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvkjFD9gZAY on a Facebook group and days later I get this amazing response from another reader.....
This site is meant primarily as a resource for other elementary visual art teachers. Enjoy! All works posted before August 2014 are images from an elementary school I worked at in DC, all posted after that date are from an language immersion elementary school in Arlington, Virginia. Feel free to use ideas shared on this blog. Please, if trying out the ideas , at the very minimum give me written/verbal credit. Thank you!!

cutting hearts and snowflakes
Kindergarten students need a lot of scissor practice. BUT, too many teachers just give out boring cut-for-no-purpose activities and expect kids to remain engaged. Around January and February we combine paper folding and paper cutting to make snowflakes and hearts. These two subject matter are exciting enough to keep kids this age engaged as they get better. This series of lessons allows kids to have plenty of options and choices..... names go on the back.
Day 1: practice cutting snowflakes (have kids take them home)
Day 2: Practice cutting snowflakes and glue them on some paper (blue or black for day or night)
Day 3: Practice cutting hearts (take them home)
Day 4: Practice cutting hearts and gluing them onto paper. Students can glue the positive AND the negative shape of the heart and if they so wish they could also cut snowflakes and glue those on their work
Day 5: they can add paper sprinkles to their work by cutting there paper into parallel line strips then across to make tiny square sprinkles.
Day 6: Can use oil pastel to add details to their work. (take home or hang for display)
