Backdrop for Little Red Riding Hood (3RD)
Since 3rd graders have been working on lesson plans related to the Murch garden or trees on our property, this one particular class studied varied ways to make the color green. Green generally is the mix of blue and yellow. Yet, artists learn that when you tweak that basic recipe and add more blue, you get another color. And when you add more yellow, you also get a new color.
For this activity, these children were given blue, yellow, white and black and told to create as many variations of green as they could.
These explorations will later be used for the backdrop for the play, Little Red Riding Hood happening in May at Murch with some of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes.
When the class ended, I told them that today they probably invented a new green. I don't think they will ever see any color in a singular way again.

3rd Graders work in teams to create birdhouses for Murch garden
The Murch garden will be graced with 2 amazing birdhouses in a few weeks. Each child created walls, then worked in teams to then create a large structure. The kids were very excited about their creations.
While working the kids go the idea of combining their group houses to make one huge birdhouse. The excitement in the room was contagious.
Check out this participation. Every child totally consumed and engaged in the creation of this birdhouse.
2nd graders and their contribution to the Murch garden
Students in 2nd grade have been sketching animals, then painting them onto small rocks. These decorated rocks will soon grace the Murch garden.

Thinking about our garden.....some ideas...
In case you have not heard, we are creating a garden here at Murch. I will be trying to get all classes involved in contributing somehow to this project. To begin, the 1st graders will make rock sculptures for the garden by painting boulders. If you see a boulder (head-sized to a bit smaller) please drop it off in the art room. We will need quite a few.

Nobody knows for sure if it was a form of communication or personalized ornaments to beautify the living quarters (caves). As the civilization progressed so did the rock art. No more cave painting, but actual rocks are used to paint different subjects like cats, dogs, pets. By adding a name or any text, or painting something dear to a person they became personalized ornaments."
