Always let kids explore a media first before starting a unit. You will learn quite a bit.

below are some examples of 2nd grade exploration paintings ....and what I learned from them....

I learned that they over-mixed colors

I learned that they lack control of the water in the brush and that they try to use the brush like a pen
Same here.....in the image below I learned that they try to layer but do not understand that the "details" get lost IF the paper below is still wet. they do not yet know the concept of wet on wet and wet on dry.

here too....the artist tries to detail but the paper below is still wet.

here the artists shows a lack of understanding of the correlation between color intensity on the paintbrush matching the color intensity in the paper.
And here.....the student thought she was done because she covered the entire paper with paint.....

Students don’t often know that several layers of water colors make the color more opaque. Instead of telling them it’s much more fun just watching them learn this on their own. This was the second day of watercolor exploration in second grade and students were given their paintings from the other day and told to add Details and anything else they wanted on the same painting. On the third day we are going to take a look at these paintings and talk about why the colors might differ in some areas why some are lighter why some are more opaque why some are very watery looking while others look really intense
