Movies made by 4th graders

         Children in 4th grade have been introduced to the basics of stop motion animation. For this project, children were encouraged to pair themselves into groups to create a movie of their choice, using any materials and backgrounds they chose. Here is a sampling of some of these videos. We used a combination of apps to make them. Some kids used Imotion app, some used iMovie and yet, others chose to work with Stopmotion studio by Cateater.

Children worked in groups and had to collaborate on making a movie about friendship to be viewed by the prek and K classes.

Ms. Otten's Class Create Simple Frame-by-Frame Movie

Ms. Otten's class and all the 5th graders are exploring various ways of making small movies. We began this unit with exploring how movies can be made frame by frame using minute movements. Ms. Otten class, which I see twice a week created a paper scroll this week in which the "character" will stand and the background rolls creating the affect of a person walking through a scene. These two are fairly elementary but in doing them children begin to generate ideas of various other possibilities within this medium. If they show excitement about this at home perhaps it's time to let them work with a digital camera and a tripod and allow them to make their own movies.

5th Graders and "Movie"-Making Unit

During the last session, 5th graders created a movie using digital camera still of clay figures moving a tiny bit each frame. I will be uploading those images and creating a movie-slide show for you to view soon. The children enjoyed making this movie and if you ask them, I'm sure you too could make one at home with any toy.

This current session below shows the children working on a class-wide hand-cranked movie scroll in which all their scenes will be included. More to come later.

Around the Corner for 5th Graders

After we finish designing our posters with a message about "Get Up and Move!" the kids will be doing a movie-making unit which will involve many aspects, two of them being flipbooks and claymation.

In trying to explore this media further I found a slew of videos on YouTube with claymation. I posted some of the most appropriate ones below.

On that note, I will be needing to borrow tripods from parents for this unit. If you have any you'd like to share with the 3 classes, please contact me?
