Day 1- Domino Adventures.
Day 1
We began our domino art unit exploring dominoes. Just letting the students try making what they all would initially try when exploring. This is essential in teaching, this allowance of time to play. Each time a set of dominoes fell, I'd stop and ask how could it have been prevented and they created a rule from that mistake. This was essential. It allowed kids to view their mistakes as stepping stones to new leaning.
Domino adventure
In 2nd grade and 4th grade we have been inspired by the work of domino artist, Lily Hevesh. Lily Hevesh is a the only world famous female domino artist. We started this unit exploring dominoes. Next, we practiced some more complex domino skills. We learned some science concepts such as chain reaction, velocity and gravity and also learned some math concepts such as parallel and how to build incrementally for ultimate success during toppling. Students use their personal devices to record either their creation process or their toppling of their dominoes on camera. Aside from the obvious math and science connections, student also learned to work in teams, resolve conflicts and discuss various possible approaches to building. What’s next? Well, depending on the students’ enthusiasm we might work on larger creations. We have also begun imagining the possibility of a schoolwide involvement in dominoes. Aventura dominó
En los grados 2nd y 4th nos hemos inspirado por las obras de dominó de la artista Lily Hevesh. Lily Hevesh es la única artista dominó mundialmente famosa. Comenzamos esta unidad explorando el dominó. A continuación, practicamos algunas habilidades de dominó más complejas. Aprendimos algunos conceptos científicos tales como reacción en cadena, velocidad y gravedad y también aprendimos algunos conceptos matemáticos tales como paralelo y cómo construir las piezas incrementalmente para un derrocamiento más exitoso. Los estudiantes utilizan sus Ipads personales para registrar su proceso de creación los varios derrocamiento de sus creaciones de domino. Aparte de las conexiones obvias de matemáticas y ciencias, los estudiantes también aprendieron a trabajar en equipos, resolver conflictos y discutir varios enfoques posibles para construir. ¿Qué es lo siguiente? Bueno, dependiendo del entusiasmo de los estudiantes, podríamos trabajar en creaciones más grandes y complicadas. Sewing with 4th graders
The gist of most of my units is I teach students a skill and then allow them to play with this new skill for some time to develop some expertise. Then, for their final project they use the learned skill to create something personally meaningful to them.
With sewing the students, especially some of the boys went into the unit "kicking and screaming"...well, not literally. The minute they saw that they could actually sew they relaxed and most actually have gone on to make second pillows.
This student googled cat online and used one of the images to inspire his own cat form.

The boys were overheard saying, "this is so relaxing." Another said, "I know why my grandma likes this so much now." Yet, another said, "I could do this all day."
I do not focus on the stitching too much. Once the child is comfortable with sewing in general they can be taught to tighten up their stitches.
The joy on this child's face when he realized he was about to finish
the pillow he's been working on for 3 weeks.
