4th Grade stop motion animation introduction videos

These are just mere explorations of the media. In every unit, we always FIRST and foremost explore the media. Each class used an hour and 10 minutes to create 2 videos. The exploration is valuable for it allows the students to grasp how many frames it takes to make even a 10 second video. This information is valuable and essential for when they break off into groups and begin working on their own video. 

OCT 31 DEADLINE: The National Geographic International Photography Contest for Kids - Winner gets a trip to Costa Rica

WHAT: The National Geographic International Photography Contest for Kids invites children to enter their photographs in four categories: animals, people, scenery, and humor. Maximum award: a trip to Costa Rica for the Grand Prize winner and up to three of his/her immediate family members.

ELIGIBILITY: legal residents of the United States and Canada (excluding Quebec) between the ages of 6 and 14 on October 31, 2011.

Family-friendly events at Strathmore photo exhibit Building Bridges, Not Fences

This is Strathmore’s upcoming art exhibition, Building Bridges, Not Fences. The show opens September 24 and is all about photography. The exhibition is free and open to the public. They are hosting a number of kid-friendly events – like camera-making workshops, lumen printing, pinhole photography and art tours:

Artists explore journey from darkroom photography to advent of digital image-making;

and reveal narratives that photojournalism creates about distant global cultures

here are some sample programs you might want to particpate with the kids:

1. On Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 10:15 a.m., a Children’s Talk & Tour invites children to explore the exhibition and exercise their creativity through a hands-on arts activity. At 1 p.m., adults learn about the artwork in the exhibition from curator Harriet Lesser during the Art Talk & Tour. Both events are free. Reservations are required for the Children’s Talk & Tour and can be made by calling (301) 581-5109.

2. For children and families, Nancy Breslin will teach a camera-less photography workshop on Saturday, October 22, 2011 from 10-11:30 a.m. Children will learn how to make pictures without a camera by creating their own cyanotype images. Breslin will also teach a more advanced class for adults on camera-less photography where students will study and create their own cyanotype and lumen prints from noon-3 p.m., also on October 22.

3. UMBC Visual Art Professor Chris Peregoy will teach a Pinhole Camera Workshop on Saturday, October 29, 2011 from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Students will learn how to make a camera using ordinary household objects, such as a cookie tin, suitcase, or even a coconut, to create pinhole camera and use them to make photographic images.

4. Children ages 7-11 will get the chance to develop their skills in photography in the PhotoKids: Take Your Best Shot! class series. Held for three Saturdays, September 24 and October 1 and 15, 2011 from 10 a.m.-noon, each session, taught by photographer Lisa Murphy, will include a directed photo shoot and formal instruction on composition and lighting, as well as a slideshow exhibition for family and friends. Each child will leave the three-session course with a finished photo album of their best shots.
