Hi everyone. The second and fourth grad we have been busy at work creating wire sculptures. We started with exploring the art of Shantell Martin. She is a London based artist who create dynamic drawings using black paint, black markers, etc. We noticed that in her work, she used a lot of stick figures which led us to explore many ways in which we can use stick figures to show the body and movement. We spent a whole class creating a wire body from donated wire from last year. Last year, a friend of mine donated about 30 pounds of colorful bendable wire. Once the wire sculptures were created, we staple them onto a base. Noticed that only 1 foot is stapled onto the base. This is done to allow the body to move freely and to be posed in different poses. In this particular class, students were directed to walk around the classroom and draw each other's sculptures. Next, we will pay for these sculptures and write about our process, our thoughts and any story that comes along with our sculpture. the focus for both grades are going to be different. For second grade, we will be focusing on where exactly the body bends and making sure that our body communicates the message we are trying to convey. With fourth graders, we will be focusing on creating a narrative. Students in fourth grade will be given the option to create a second figure to allow, a story to emerge from the engagement between these two figures.
