Amazingly detailed bird sketches (3rd Grade/HSU)
This 3rd grade class made the most amazing birdhouse for the Murch garden out of popsicles sticks. To decorate the birdhouse we made detailed sketches of birds that will afterwords be decoupaged on the house. I connected adding 'details' to our drawings as similar to adding 'details' to our stories. I told a story with very little detail and then the same story with many more details, then asked the kids which story they preferred. Kids loved the more detailed story. I then told them that the 'viewer' too prefers more details, for the eyes have more to see. On that note, I gave them wonderful calendar images (donated by Murch parents) from which to sketch from. I LOVE how amazingly different these sketches are!!

50 calendars have been ordered so far (updated November 5th, 2010)....Our goal was to sell at least 50 calendars!!! Way to go Murch!! So rush in your orders, deadline is Friday, November 5th at 4pm and midnight for online orders.
This is the front cover. The children in each class voted for their peers. The top of each 5th grade class is on the cover.
Because there are 61 paintings and only 48 large slots, some paintings are displayed on the dates. This allowed me to also show these paintings in detail. See how the bird from the painting on the 10 of the month is highlighted on the 8th of the month.
Your calendar will be a spiral bind.
On the month pages, there will be 4 paintings per page. Each 5th grade class got 4 pages each.
I used the kids' in-class votes of each others' work as the criteria for choosing which work gets highlighted.

Shorebird Paintings for 5th Calendar Fundraiser
Here are all the paintings created by 5th graders for the 2011 calendar that will be for sale later this month. The funds we collect will go to support shorebird rescue in the gulf. To find out more about this click here. Since we only have 12 months, children voted in class for the most successful paintings based on technical criteria they came up with themselves. The paintings with most votes will be larger in size, yet, all paintings will be in the calendar.
You will need a pay pal account to order the calendar. Please keep checking the site in the next few weeks to order them. They will be professionally printed through www.snapfish.com.
