Painting Paper in 1st Grade

We explored the collage art of Eric Carle and made a list of various ways we figured he must paint his paper. We then created our own painted paper.

Children used Popsicle sticks to scratch their painted paper. Check out this painted paper factory! Eric Carle would be proud!

Pre-k Printmaking Unit

Kids in Pre-K create giant stamps in the art studio. They used precut cardboard donated by parents to create a giant stamp with their classmates.

We glued on precut shapes, then painted them white.......last, we placed a large black paper on top and gently rubbed it....when we pulled it out....VOILA! what a huge print we made!

Kindergarten Begin Drawing Unit

Artists in Kindergarten began their drawing unit. We learned what a line looks like and what makes a line different than a shape. Children then were given Cray pas to use the lines they listed to decorate a square. Here are some examples of this exploration.

4th Grade Collage Practice

Children in 4th grade are beginning their collage unit. They are being introduced to two collage artists, Eric Carle and Christopher Myers. These are beginning explorations in collage. Most of the collage work we do for this unit will include myths we read in class. Come back soon to see more!!

Aztec Inspired Animals Completed!!

Kids in 1st grade have finished their Aztec Inspired Animals. Children first explored drawing realistic images of animals using shapes. They then chose one of their favorite animal drawing, enlarged it and painted it all black. Children were then introduced to some Aztec Animal images and created a visual list of common characteristic they found in these images. To complete their Aztec animals they used detail brushes to decorate their animals with these decorative elements.

1st Graders learn about realistic drawing (part 2, Ms. Cresswell's class)

For our painting unit we will be making stylistic paintings of animals inspired by Aztec representation of familiar animals. To begin we started with realistic drawings of animals. I explained to the kids that shapes are found everywhere, even in animals. I also taught them about using "details" such as fur, whiskers, feathers, claws, eyes, nose, etc are what makes the drawing even more realistic. They were so proud of their drawings that they wanted to take them home right away. They need the drawings to inform their paintings next week. Here they placed their names besides their most successful drawing out of the 6-7 they drew that day.

The beginning of our collage unit, we looked over various illustration created by Eric Carle (children's author and illustrator) and made a list of some observations we made about his style. We then followed his style to make our own collection of painted paper.
