Ms. Levy's class QUICK 2-minute movement sketches

These are 2-minute movement sketches. Children will be creating a poster carrying a message about moving your body and daily fun exercise which will be hung around the school. I also wanted to encourage the kids to walk away from their pre-set recipe ideas about how a body is "drawn" and really look at what is happening with these shapes.

Mr. Welsh's Class Explores Printing

Children in Mr. Welsh's Kindergarten class explored printmaking this week. Children used blocks donated by Ms. Bogan and corks, cups and spools donated by parents to create their prints. Next week the kids will create a huge stamp using cardboard. The child's name is on the lower right hand corner. The letters KW follow it, short for "Kindergarten, Welsh".

Painting Our Butterflies!!

Kids in 2nd grade used watercolor brushes to paint their buttlerflies. Next week, they will use detail brushes to add details on their painting.

Gesture Drawings with the 5th Graders

In their design unit, Ms. Otten's class did 3-minute gesture drawings. Each child will be creating a poster to encourage other kids to move and exercise and will be hung around the school. Children will study various font designs and will make their poster look like a traditional advertisement or billboard.

Home connections:
Here is a gesture drawing class!!. You can also cut out images of people in motion from the sport pages or magazines and draw them in your sketchbook.

5th Grade Watercolors hanging on 1st Floor

Please come see the 5th grade watercolors of DC and World landmarks. I displayed all 3 classes this afternoon in the first floor by one of the stairs closest pre-k building.

For this painting unit kids:
-learned the 2 basic techniques in watercolor, wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry
-Learned to begin with large shapes first and add details later
-Learned that details should be added on with a thinner brush
-Learned that colors become more intense when you add a second coat
-Learned that some artists choose to intentionally let their colors bleed into each other for the effect.

Please note that if your child's is not hanging on the wall (1) your child either did not complete it, (2) were in the group of works I just found in Ms. Otten's folder today.
